Can’t Miss Snorkeling Spots Along the Kauai Coast

When you visit Hawaii, you absolutely can’t leave without snorkeling. If you think the waters provide a gorgeous view from above, wait until you see what’s underneath! There are tons of convenient snorkeling locations located near our Waipouli Beach Resort, so you can get out the door in a hurry. Here is your full guide to snorkeling on Kauai.

Ke’e Beach

Ke’e Beach on the island’s northern side is a great place to snorkel. The tide here makes snorkeling good for intermediate levels, while kids and beginners may have a hard time. However, there is a lagoon where those who don’t snorkel can enjoy themselves. In the water, you’ll find a barrier reef with sea life like turtles and balistes, and the waters are relatively shallow. Be sure to wear a life jacket at this beach, as there is no lifeguard.

Lydgate State Park

For a more family-friendly snorkeling experience, head to Lydgate State Park. Located on the eastern shore, this park features two snorkeling locations, one that’s perfect for kids and the other that suits teens and adults. This is a great spot for beginners, and you’re likely to spot tons of wildlife like surgeonfish, jacks, pufferfish, and more. In addition to snorkeling, you can picnic, grill, and swim, all under the watchful eye of the lifeguards.

Lawai Beach

This beach on the southern shore welcomes experienced swimmers to snorkel. The area is protected by a barrier reef, allowing for gorgeous views of both fish and coral. Lawai Beach does tend to get crowded, but it’s worth it for the view along. Parking is abundant, so there’s plenty of room for everyone. Just be sure to watch the waters, as conditions can change quickly.

Choose Your Kauai Resort Rental

Once you’re done with your day on the water, return to one of our Kauai beach resort rentals for a relaxing evening. You can enjoy the view of the ocean or curl up inside for movie night. Whatever you choose, you’ll be in the lap of luxury.

What Will I See?

Of course, you should expect to see tons of incredible wildlife while snorkeling in Kauai! There are endless varieties of fish in this area, so you could spot anything from needlefish to unicornfish to rainbow-colored wrasses. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a majestic sea turtle! Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are good finds as well.

Safety Tips

In some of the more advanced areas, there is a risk of getting caught in a rip tide. If you find yourself in this situation, knowing what to do will help you stay calm and get out quickly. Control your breathing, conserve your energy, and keep your head above water. Float or tread water until you’re able to swim parallel to the shore. The breaking waves near you will help you find the current’s edge. Once you’re out of the rip tide, swim diagonally to reach the shoreline.

What to Pack

Of course, there are several things you’ll need before you head to the beach for snorkeling:

Unless you’re a seasoned snorkeler, chances are that you probably don’t own some of the equipment you need. Luckily, there are several convenient rental companies on Kauai that will provide everything you need. Visit Kauai Snorkel Rentals in Kapa’a or Boss Frog’s in Koloa.
