Your Guide to the Kauai Bike Path

The Kauai bike path is one of the most popular things to do in Kapaa! The name of the path is “Ke Ala Hele Makalae” which means: the path that goes by the coast.

This bike path runs along the famous coconut coast on the East side of the island from Lydgate Beach Park all the way to Donkey’s Beach. You’ll see walkers, runners, and bikers all enjoying this beautiful path along the coast.

The path is conveniently located near our vacation rentals in the Kapaa area. If you are staying at Waipouli Beach Resort Plantation HaleIslander on the Beach, Kapaa Shore or the Wailua Riverside Hideaway, you can easily rent bikes near these locations and hop on the bike path for a day of exploration!

This path is a great family fun activity for everyone to enjoy!

The Spa by the Sea at Waipouli Beach Resort offers bike rentals in the lobby area; you can rent bikes for 3 hours for just $15 or $20 for the WHOLE day! They also rent out bike trailers for small children and other beach gear!

In this blog, we’ll guide you through a day along the Kauai bike path with some places to stop as you discover why the bike path is a must-do on your Kauai vacation! First stop: Fuji Beach!

Fuji Beach

This is a great first stop if you are catching the bike path near Kapaa Shore and Waipouli Beach Resort.  You can catch the bike path by taking Ala Road just off Kuhio Highway, you’ll see Kapaa Shore to your right and it’s really close to Waipouli Beach Resort!  You can follow this road and it will lead you to the bike path, hugging the Ocean.  Fuji Beach is along this stretch of beach. This is a great little beach perfect for a dip! You can see a rock wall in the ocean protecting the rough shore break, so this is great beach for small children!

Once you’ve stopped at Fuji beach, you can hop back on the bike for more beautiful coast line! You’ll pass Kapaa Beach Park, also great for a little dip. You’ll also pass the Kapaa library and some fun bridges. Next stop: Lunch!

Don’t forget to stop for lunch!

Along the Kauai bike path you’ll see some yummy food trucks! Stop in and grab some island fish tacos at Al Pastor Taco truck, or some great BBQ chicken at Chicken in a Barrel just next door. And top it off with some dessert at Shave Ice Tege Tege! These great food places are just off the bike path to your left when you pass the Kapaa swimming pool. Don’t miss out on some of Kapaa’s best food!

After lunch, hop on that bike and continue on the path, soaking in the scenic views of the beautiful Kapaa coast line. Kealia Beach is up next!

Kealia Beach

You can’t miss Kealia Beach, it’s long stretch of golden sand and aqua waters will draw you in immediately! This beach is great for body surfing and boogie boarding! Be sure to be aware of the ocean as there can be a rough shore break here and some rip tides. There are lifeguards on duty at this beach, be sure to look for signs to see where it is safe to swim! This is an awesome beach to relax, read a book and get a nice sun tan!

Once you’ve soaked in Kealia Beach, it’s back on the bike for your next stop: Pineapple Dump!

Pineapple Dump

Bring your camera or phone for a quick photo op at the “Pineapple Dump”, this spot is just off the bike path north of Kealia Beach. There is a little gazebo or place to sit and relax under the shade and read about the Pineapple Dump, you can’t miss it! Look for the pineapple fence!

Take a pic and then head to the prize at the end of path, Donkey’s Beach!

Donkey’s Beach

This beach is absolutely beautiful and is just off the bike path near the end! This beach is great for relaxing and sun bathing. There can be strong waves here, so be careful when going swimming as there is not a lifeguard on duty.  Make this beach a must see on your vacation to beautiful Kauai! Even if you don’t access this beach via the bike path, there is a parking lot off the Kuhio highway for guests to park and walk down. There is a beautiful tree lined tunnel leading down to this beach from a parking lot at the top. The walk is worth it for this beautiful beach at the end!

The Kauai bike path gives you great exercise for everyone in the family coupled with beautiful scenery along the way. Make the Kauai bike path a must-do on your next Kauai vacation!
