Kauai Tips and Tricks for the Savvy Traveler

Staying at one of our beachfront vacation rentals Kauai is a fantastic adventure, opening you up to all the magical possibilities of Hawaii’s great northern island. But, it is best to come prepared. We offer a comprehensive packing and travel guide, highlighting the best tips and tricks to being a savvy Kauai traveler.

Driving

Driving around Kauai is not necessarily difficult. You can clear the whole island in about three hours. But there are ways to secure your travel. For example, it is best to use bypass roads whenever possible. Both Kapa’a Bypass Road and the Kōloa Bypass will really help avoid that clunky seasonal traffic.

It is also best to travel during quieter times whenever possible, such as in the early morning or evening. This avoids local traffic which includes school and work commute. Local traffic peaks from 7:15-7:45 a.m. We also suggest avoiding midday long-distance drives or else be caught up in the peak afternoon travelers. This definitely applies strongly to East Shore, which carries its own travel considerations.

one lane bridges on kauai

Interestingly, we have many one-lane bridges on Kauai. This can cause alarm for visitors, but it’s okay! Usually, the one-car lane bridges take turns in sets of about five to seven cars. Be aware, alert, and respectful. Wave thank you and don’t push the car limit. You will feel when it is enough and it is always best to be conservative in this area.

If you do want to stop and see the hidden island nooks by the road, pull off to the side completely and use your blinkers. The roads are too small to accommodate drivers who hang out onto the streets.

Finally, cell phone use while driving on the island is illegal. Unlike other areas you may have traveled to, it is strictly enforced and carries a hefty fine.

Restaurants

So many restaurants to see and so little time! Our below tips will help you get to where you need to be.

The top Kauai restaurants will get packed out by around 7 p.m. You aren’t the only one trying to get into the best cafes on the island. The locals love them too! If you want to get a spot for the evening, try to get in by 6 p.m. It will be easier to find local parking and you will have a more enjoyable experience.

Reservations are also recommended. Kintaros in Kapaa, the Dolphin & Bar Acuda in Hanalei, and Roy’s & Beach house in Poipu are all super popular and get super busy! Ask at the desk of our Kauai condo rentals for more suggestions.

Taking Care of Our Island Paradise

Kauai is a natural treasure and it deserves tender love and care. Please be courteous and conscientious of your surroundings. We can all do our part in taking care of the places we enjoy and love! This spirited love is called “malama” in traditional Hawaiian, meaning “to take care.” This is everyone’s “Kuleana”, our responsibility, as we all enjoy and benefit from this island!

Recycling is the standard. We take this seriously at Waipouli Beach Resort with posted bins. We just don’t have the space for landfills! Most of us try to be conscious when we are at home in our daily routine, but we ask for your help taking care of island paradise while on your vacation. We do try to make it easy. There are recycling collection bins conveniently located all over the island for plastic #1 & 2, glass, cardboard/paper & aluminum. Also, the currents & winds wash-in debris and microplastic from overseas.

Take a moment to pick up trash if you see it on a beach. Virtually every location has a bin. Secure your trash and recycle every chance you get to help preserve the magic of Kauai. It means a lot to take some time to manage and minimize the trail you leave behind.

Airport Travel

Kauai is not accessible by car. You have to get in by the local Lihue Airport. While the airport is small, we suggest you arrive at least two hours early. Jet lag can also be problematic especially if you’re traveling back to the East Coast destinations such as New York or Boston. It is best to jump right in when you have an overnight flight. Adjust your clocks right away and try to tough it out to a normal bedtime for your first day back home.

Hopefully, these tips have helped dissuade some of your Kauai travel concerns. They will come in handy when you navigate this paradise!
